​When he’s not in his office on campus, CCPE Dean Jeet Joshee is often catching a plane and heading off to other countries in his dual role as the Associate Vice President of International Education and Global Engagement. As part of his mission to spread awareness of CSULB’s international programs, Joshee spent nearly two weeks in May on a multi-purpose trip to China and Nepal. In addition to sharing educational program information with prospective international students, he also met with university partners, government officials, and media outlets to help expand CSULB’s global network of communities.

HAW_Brand Design Workshop_600.jpg
Designing brands for today’s global market place demands a particular set of skills. Since 2016, CSULB professor Tor Hovind and his counterpart Sven Vogel—from Germany’s Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW)—have worked across continents to train students in brand development. In July, their collaboration continued during the two-week International Brand Design Summer Workshop at HAW, where over 40 students from both universities engaged in research and developed design prototypes.

CCPE Associate Dean and Executive Director for International Programs, Terrence Graham, traveled to Kazakhstan in April for the U.S.-Kazakhstan University Partnerships Coaching Program. The Central Asian country is seeking to align their higher education efforts with American practices, and the trip was funded by the U.S. State Department to foster connections between U.S. and Kazakhstani universities.

Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand became the center of worldwide attention this past summer, when members of a youth soccer team were rescued from a flooded cave. Since the region is home to a multi-ethnic mix of recently arrived migrants and refugees, several members of the team gained additional attention for being stateless—unable to vote, buy land, travel freely, or seek work.

CSULB University Honors instructor and Professor of French Literature, Professor Aparna Nayak, led 13 students from various majors on a Spring Study Abroad trip to Paris, Brussels and Strasbourg this past March. Nayak’s capstone seminar course was intended to broaden and deepen students' perspectives on contemporary European society through the seven-day international trip. Students conducted multiple interviews and held discussions with organizations including the EU Commission, the EU Committee of the Regions, the Unrepresented Nations and People’s Organizations (UNPO), Utopia 56, European Parliament, and the Council of Europe.

​Japan’s Sendai University, which specializes in kinesiology and physical education, celebrated its 50th Anniversary last fall with a week-long series of events. Located northeast of Tokyo, Sendai has enjoyed a longstanding student exchange partnership with CSULB’s Center for International Education (CIE), and invited representatives from CSULB among 19 educational institutions from 13 countries. Representatives from Long Beach included CCPE Dean Dr. Jeet Joshee and CCPE Program Developer Hitoshi Furuya, along with five CSULB students and recent graduates who had participated in study abroad programs at Sendai.
