debuted the Pre-College Summer Academy this year, a dual-enrollment
program where high school juniors and seniors each received three units
of college credit at CSULB, at no cost. Through a partnership with the
College of Liberal Arts and Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD),
28 students participated by taking one of two available courses:
Introduction to Public Speaking and Introduction to Acting.
Transportation was provided by LBUSD to bus the students to campus on
weekday mornings from July 9 through August 2, adding up to 48 hours of
class time and a head start on college. The initiative was inspired by
the Long Beach College Promise, launched in 2008 to offer more support
for students throughout their educational journey.
Introduction to Public Speaking was taught by Dr. Ann Johnson, chair of the
Communication Studies department, to help students become more
comfortable speaking in front of diverse audiences. Introduction to
Acting was taught by Sky Paley, a CSULB alum and professional actor.
watched my students embark on a journey that fundamentally changed them
and left them filled with a deeper understanding of the core principals
of acting, with a desire and curiosity to learn more,” said Paley.
