Did you make a New Year’s Resolution yet? If not, we have a great one for you: Go Green in 2012! We talked to John Shipman and Wesley Harding, two instructors in our “green” programs, about how to make small changes this year to live greener, save money, and reduce your carbon footprint:

1) Start a compost heap or bin.
2) Take shorter showers and put low-flow fixtures on your faucets.
3) Walk to an errand instead of driving one day a week.
4) Capture rain water in a rain barrel or rain cistern to use later.
5) Complete an energy audit on your home to see what other changes can be made.
6) Recycle more.
7) Change all of your light bulbs to CFL or LED.
8) Carpool or ride your bike more often.
9) Turn your thermostat down and put on a sweater.
10) Talk to a neighbor or friend about your 'green resolution' and challenge them to do the same with one friend.
If living green is something that interests you, you may want to leverage it into a career! New environmental and energy laws and policies are creating “green” career opportunities in California and beyond. Our programs provide practical education on renewable energy, green building, sustainable living, and alternative construction methods. For more information, visit
John Shipman is CEO of Energy Efficient Management, Inc. He is a licensed realtor, a licensed general building contractor, a certified green builder, and a green project specialist.
Wesley Harding is CEO of Harding Construction & Sustainable Solutions, a corporation specializing in green residential remodeling and Net-Zero building retrofits. He is also President of RetroH20, a water conservation corporation specializing in grey water and rain water harvesting systems.

Great tips list. Another great addition to your list would be freecycling. When you freecycle you are passing your unwanted items on to someone who can make use of them and keeps them out of landfills and recycling centers that release harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

A wonderful list to get started on greener living habits. How about changing eating habits and the way you shop? Try meatless mondays, try to go as "fresh" as possible to reduce the purchase of unnecessary boxes, bags, cartons and containers.

Approximately around 10 percent of all household batteries are recycled. This is a bad result. A majority of the batteries end up in landfill, where they can leak dangerous chemicals.
